Elliot E. Davis (1885-1947) was born and raised in the old District of Nut Plains, the son of Robert E. and Lydia Griswold Davis. He received a higher education at the Yale Business School in New Haven and assumed proprietorship of the Davis & Dudley grocery business in Guilford in 1912, which he operated for more than twenty years. In 1916, he purchased the landmark building on the Green known as “Music Hall” (69-75 Whitfield Street) to accommodate his business interests. Later, Elliot accepted a position as salesman for Seaman Brothers, a New York City wholesale grocer, where he worked until 1938.
