About the Event

A Small Town in a Big War explores how the people of Guilford—and Madison, then known as East Guilford—experienced everyday life during one of the most pivotal events in American history.

Rather than focusing on distant battlefields and major campaigns, this exhibit brings the Revolution home. Through original documents, artifacts, and the stories of local residents, visitors will discover how ordinary families navigated shortages, military service, coastal threats, divided loyalties, and the daily uncertainties of wartime.

In Guilford, the Revolution was not a faraway conflict—it was part of everyday life. Local men and women contributed through vigilance, sacrifice, and perseverance, shaping their community's role in the struggle for independence.
