The Medad Stone Tavern (1803)

171 Three Mile Course, Guilford, CT

The Medad Stone Tavern is a Dutch gambrel-style, fourteen-room, ten-fireplace tavern built in 1803 by Medad Stone. Intended to serve travelers along what Stone believed would become a rerouted Boston Post Road, the tavern never opened after the road remained on its original route. The property remained in the Davis family for nearly 200 years before being bequeathed to the Guilford Keeping Society by Leonard Davis Hubbard in 2001. The Society restored the building to its 1803 appearance and opened it as "the tavern that opened 200 years late." Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010, the ten-acre property also includes a barn, corncrib, garage, and open fields. Today, the Tavern welcomes visitors for special events, including the Guilford Keeping Society's Memorial Day Picnic and September Wine Tasting.
