Historical Maps of Guilford

Bailey’s Bird's-Eye Map of Guilford, 1881

Several small factories with smokestacks - the manufactory of I.S. Spencer's Sons, the Guilford Canning Company, and the Guilford Enterprise Company – and the Henry Whitfield House are pictured in vignettes.

School District Map of the Town of Guilford 1868

Each school district is colorized. This map is a color version of the same map from 1850. Altitude heights are show. Many now obsolete property names are given, such as: Cherry Hill, Mount View, The Maples, Fairview, Birghen, Pleasant Dale, Maple Row, Walnut Grove House, Sea Side Home, Mulberry Farm, Sea Side House, Cooks Point, Mount Pleasant, Clear Brook Farms, and Fowler & Colburn Fish Oil Works, as well as East River Ship Yard and H. Ives Boarding House. An original copy is present at the Thomas Griswold House Museum.

These highly detailed maps provide building, outbuilding, and property footprints, labeled streets, addresses and information about building materials and construction features for urban and residential areas in Guilford.

Borough of Guilford Map by D. H. Hurd, 1893

The "Guildford Borough Map” shows the center part of town. It features streets, buildings, the railroad and landmarks still present today, such as the Guilford Soldier Monument, Alderbrook Cemetery and St. George's Church. It is a detailed, hand-colored lithograph. The map is part of the “Town and City Atlas of the State of Connecticut”, which was compiled from government surveys, county records, and on-site investigations. Published by D.H. Hurd & Co., 1893

A colorized copy hangs on the wall in the Thomas Griswold House Museum. A black & white version is located at the Medad Stone Tavern Museum.

 

The Guilford Green is designated as a “Park”. The Thomas Griswold House, 174 Boston Str., is referred to as “Elm Hall”. The “Old Elm Tree” is shown in its approximate location. “Mosquito Lane” is currently Meadow Street. “Harbor Street” now Whitfield Street.

This insert map was part of the Beer's Atlas map of the entire town.

Ullrich’s 1961 Map of Guilford

The M. K. Ullrich 1961 map of Guilford is a wonderful early public hand-out street map of Guilford. It differentiates between main roads, secondary roads and other roads. It’s names many harbors, bays, rocks, beaches, points, hills, bluffs, mountains, ponds, lakes, swamps, brooks, rivers, streams, etc.

Tuttle's Handwritten Map of Original Allotments, Guilford downtown, 1640 to 1735

Map shows the Original Allotments in Guilford and succession of owners from 1640 to 1735. The original was discovered among papers of the late Joel Tuttle (1792 – 1855) and most likely was the result of his careful research. Presented by Mrs. Henry Elliot Fowler, genealogist, 2 Fair St. The original handwritten map is in the collection of the Henry Whitfield State Museum.

The map is a transcribed copy of a reproduction of the original handwritten map that was found among papers of the late Joel Tuttle (1792 – 1855) and most likely was the result of his careful research. The original handwritten map is in the collection of the Henry Whitfield State Museum.

Irvine's Map of the Town of Guilford, 1852

A large scale, hand-colored lithographed wall map, linen-backed in the Guilford Free Library. Relief is shown by hachure lines. It includes an ancillary map of the 'Village of Guilford', and 11 vignette views of prominent buildings.

Joel Helander's Map of Clapboard Hill Area, 1968

Map showing the property owned by the Knowles-Lombard Co., Guilford CT as of July 30, 1924

This map shows the property once owned by the Knowles-Lombard canning company in 1924 between Boston Street (at bottom of map) and Goose Lane (top right of map), before Route 1 and Interstate 95 were put through. The map was delineated by JHF Clark surveyor, Madison Conn. Several original copies of the map are known to exist. This one was acquired by the Keeping Society in 1965. It was found in the found in the attic of the Thomas Griswold house Museum by Pat Lovelace and John Plant in 2016. A clean digital version was prepared for viewing by the Guilford Keeping Society Library Committee (Oct 2025). Locations of current roads (Boston St., Goose Lane, Rt. 1 and Rt. 95) are superimposed on to the Knowles map.

Guilford Center, Lois North map, 1947

Lois North delineated the map using quills from her geese in 1947. It identifies many houses by name and date that were built between 1639 and 1810, later houses are unnamed. Streets have their present names. One copy was donated by Carl Balestracci Jr. and is located at the Medad Stone Tavern. Another copy is at the Thomas Griswold House Museum.
