Edmund F. Dudley

Photographer Edmund F. Dudley, glass negatives, 1910

Edmund F. Dudley (1885-1948) was the son of H. Francis and Mary (Augur) Dudley, raised on the Dudley farm at 164 Tanner Marsh Road in Clapboard Hill District. At sixteen years of age, in 1905, Edmund graduated from Guilford High School and, in the same year, entered employment at the Guilford Savings Bank. At this hometown banking institution, Edmund eventually became secretary and assistant treasurer. In 1907, he went into partnership with Henry S. Davis in the stationary and news store that later became known as Dudley and Beckwith. Leon P. Beckwith became Edmund’s new business partner in 1908 and the two men enjoyed a close and enduring friendship. In 1919, he was a representative from Guilford to the Connecticut General Assembly. He was very active in the First Congregational Church, having served as the chairman of the church’s Centennial Committee for its 1930 commemoration. Edmund Dudley died of a sudden heart attack after walking in the cold wind from his home on Clapboard Hill to the bus stop at the water tower.
