William A. Dudley

4"x 5" Glass Negatives

William A. Dudley (1874-1968) was the seventh generation in his Dudley line to pass a lifetime at Clapboard Hill. He was born on the family farm there, the son of Eli T. Dudley and Caroline Wilcox. After graduating from Guilford High School in 1893, William attended a business college in New Haven and remained on the family farm. His amateur stint with photography was evidently a short-lived one around the time of his marriage to Louva Redfield in 1897. At that time, William and Louva Dudley moved into a new house at 295 Clapboard Hill Road, which is where William’s glass plate negatives were stored until they were gifted to G.K.S. Through Louva Redfield’s connections to her hometown of Killingworth, William Dudley provided the photo illustrations for a booklet about the town of Killingworth, circa 1897. William is remembered as a dignified and courteous man with immense physical strength. He conducted a teaming business at Clapboard Hill, using two big teams of horses to haul logs from woodlots. He had a portable gasoline engine sawmill and sold cordwood. Later, his barns were stocked with white-faced beef cattle, which he raised on a large scale. He kept cows, too, and sold milk to Lester Williams’ dairy up the hillside. For many years, William Dudley was a deacon in the First Congregational Church and for a brief period, 1919-1920, he served as Judge of Probate for the District of Guilford.
